{"id":11,"date":"2013-11-02T23:32:27","date_gmt":"2013-11-02T23:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/svops.com\/blog\/?p=11"},"modified":"2015-10-06T18:23:31","modified_gmt":"2015-10-06T18:23:31","slug":"monitoring-and-alerting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/svops.com\/blog\/monitoring-and-alerting\/","title":{"rendered":"Monitoring and Alerting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monitoring is a good thing (duh!). \u00a0It&#8217;s one of the core functions that an operations group provides. \u00a0As with most things, there are good ways and bad ways of doing monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>When you monitor, you end up with some kind of dashboard, say with Nagios:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12\" src=\"http:\/\/svops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/nagios-300x239.png\" alt=\"nagios\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"http:\/\/svops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/nagios-300x239.png 300w, http:\/\/svops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/nagios.png 642w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Which is very helpful, <strong><em>when you&#8217;re looking at it<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ever seen a setup like this?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/svops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SOC_Security_Monitors.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-141\" src=\"http:\/\/svops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SOC_Security_Monitors-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"SOC_Security_Monitors\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"http:\/\/svops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SOC_Security_Monitors-300x216.jpg 300w, http:\/\/svops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/SOC_Security_Monitors.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think people who build systems like this really liked the movie War Games, but have missed one important difference &#8211; in the movie, it was someone&#8217;s job to sit and watch the screens 24\/7\/365. \u00a0Do you have staff for that? \u00a0Should we treat people that way?<\/p>\n<p>In the real world, people have better things to do than stare at a monitor, waiting for some indicator to turn red. \u00a0Large displays like this become &#8220;monitoring theater&#8221; (see <a title=\"Security Theater\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Security_theater\" target=\"_blank\">Security Theater<\/a>) &#8211; basically fluff to make people think the system is being monitored.
